About your hosts

A home with a past, ready to welcome new stories

Poets Cottage has lived many lives, and we’re proud to welcome guests who want to experience Stanley in a way that feels personal and unhurried. We’ve restored it with care and share it with genuine warmth, a place where new stories begin with every stay.

Restoring what was already here

When we first encountered the house, it had been sitting quietly for years. Despite its condition, its presence was unmistakable.

The craftsmanship, proportions, and character spoke of another era and deserved to be preserved rather than replaced.

Restoring Poets Cottage was never about turning it into something new. It was about respecting what was here, bringing it back to life, and preparing it for a new chapter.

Why we chose a hosted stay

We’re Geraldine and Dave, and it’s a genuine pleasure to welcome guests to Poets Cottage. After lovingly restoring the cottage, we chose a hosted stay shaped by warmth and thoughtful hospitality. Guests are welcomed personally, breakfast is prepared each morning, and we’re always nearby when needed.

Our home sits at the rear of the property, which means we’re close enough to help with anything that comes up, but far enough away that the cottage is entirely your own space. We’re happy to chat, share local knowledge, or simply let you be. Some guests enjoy conversation over breakfast or a recommendation for the day ahead. Others prefer quiet and privacy. Both are equally welcome here.

What we love most about hosting is the people.

The conversations, the connections, and the moments guests share with each other, often over breakfast or in the sitting room at the end of the day.

Those interactions are what make Poets Cottage feel like more than just a place to stay, and honestly, they’re our favourite part of the whole thing.

Our commitment to caring for this place

Hosting guests in a heritage building in one of Tasmania’s most beautiful corners comes with a responsibility we take seriously, not just to the property, but to the environment around it.

We’re participants in the Tourism Emissions Reduction Program, a national initiative that helps tourism businesses understand and reduce their environmental impact. Through the program, we’ve estimated emissions across our key business operations, from energy use to day-to-day activities, so we can make informed decisions about where we can do better.

For us, this means working towards a few things that matter to us:

  • Reducing the environmental impact of how we run the cottage, from energy use to the suppliers we choose.
  • Thinking about sustainability in the practical decisions we make every day, not just the big ones.
  • Being part of a Stanley community we’re proud of, and playing our part in keeping it the kind of place people want to visit for generations to come.

We’re not going to claim we’ve got it all figured out. But we are measuring, we are making changes, and we’re committed to continuing that work over time.

Our hope is simple, that your time here becomes part of what you remember most about Tasmania.
